CD Review: THE TIMES HERALD RECORD, Sullivan County, N.Y. Edition
November 11, 1994 By Stephan Israel
Landon is a pianist/composer/singer/songwriter who's just recorded his first album, "LOVE SONGS AND JAZZ." If you like the romantic tunes of Harry Connick Jr., you'll love this.
Landon, backed by bassist Jon Hart and drummer Joe Mantia, uses his smooth, suave, romantic voice to sing his gently swinging original tunes with lyrics such as, "What I feel is pure delight / Holding you In my arms tonight." And even though Landon's soft voice and unabashedly romantic songs will remind you of Connick, he's a lot less pretentious and much more original than the superstar with the ever present stubble and Frank Sinatra style.
CD Review: RHYTHM & NEWS by George Fletcher
11-song CD Landon Creative International "LOVE SONGS AND JAZZ" is just that. The light traditional jazz back drop leaves plenty of room for Landon's pleasant vocal style, and lets this classy material breath. Romantic types should really like this CD. Lyrically, "LOVE SONGS AND JAZZ" is sort of Bacharach – David/Paul McCartney hybrid sound, due to their simple sincerity and cabaret feel. The trio's playing is top notch. Pianist Landon and company, (acoustic bassist Jon Hart, drummer Joe Manita) are all accomplished players.
With contemporary instrumentation, two of the cuts on this CD, "I Can See" and "Don't Come Back", could have mainstream potential "Light Sea". The CD's lone instrumental, is a wonderful showcase for the trio's exceptional talents.
Produced and arranged by Landon, recorded at the Make Believe Ballroom, in West Shokan.
Note from the artist:
I am very proud of Love Songs & Jazz. As my first solo effort, Love Songs & Jazz allowed me to express myself pianistically, vocally, and as a songwriter. The music tracks were recorded live, with no overdubs; the vocals were recorded after the rhythm tracks were finished. The CD is like a snapshot of where I was musically in 1994. I had reached a place in my life where I wanted to express the many aspects of love, some real, some imagined.
